On its face, this was a lot to give up for a couple of rentals (so far). I have a feeling if boston wanted to add, they were going to have to throw extra in. (unless it was luke schenn maybe?). Not thrilled to not have a first or second rounder this year, however sweeney is all in. Ill give him credit for being creative on this one. Needs were addressed and Sweeney is maximizing their shot at the cup this year.

I wonder if he will swing any more moves. Certainly doesnt need to but who knows.

I don't think it was too much to give up. The picks are spread out and I would rather have proven commodities in Orlov, Hathaway and Lindholm than picks this year. That's 2 top 4 defenders and a very solid bottom 6 wing. Only having to give up Smith and not having to move Lysell or Lohrei is really good.

Sweeney tried something similar before bringing Rinaldo here. You now have Marchand, Frederic and Hathaway out there. That has potential to draw a lot of powerplays. If you hated the B's now, wait till Hathaway joins.

Orlov is a stud. Always liked his game.

I like it. Adding a top 4 dman that can potentially play top pairing with Mccavoy is a win. A 1st is always a lot to part with but they keep their prospects & adding a top 4 dman is tough to do at any time. The second was a necessity I’m sure to take on Smiths deal.

It’s crazy how up against the cap this team is.

My only concern and it’s small is the ability to get scoring from the 3rd line. On the surface it should be fine with Coyle, Hall and Frederic. It’s got potential to get hot as these are good players but for some reason I can see going stale.

Bringing in a 3rd line RW scorer is probably on Don’s wish list. A 4th line of Frederic, Foligno, Hathaway sounds amazing.

Yes, this does improve the team. I would be happier if one or both signed reasonable extensions (even the Russian ).

Not giving up Lysell or Lohrei is huge too. Forgot that point.

Underrated small bit about this trade, this is a net cap space gain as well. Although its only a little more than 300k.

This was so much better than a trade for Gavrikov. Columbus is probably pissed.

Oh you know it dude. Or he can join the leafs for 5 or 6 playoff games before the inevitable happens and the leafs lose in the first round again.

I love how the Leafs defense and goaltending is held together with skate laces and snot - and they go out and get more scoring. The Bruins defense is already fantastic with great goaltending and GAA numbers and they go and get even BETTER on the defensive side of things. Knowing full well that's what is needed in the playoffs.

Very good GM'ing.

None of the D available are from Ontario so Dubas can't trade for them.

you guys just HAD to get guys from the Caps huh?

Hathaway has been a pain in the ass for the Canes for years now.

That feels intentional.

Imagine paying the same price for Gavrikov as the Bruins do for Orlov.

Ken Holland masterclass.

Why does it matter who Boston gets? Carolina won't make it far enough to play them.
